The collection consists of (I) personal papers of (a) Thomas Holt, 1865-1879, including letters from the Prince of Wales, T. S. Mort, James Martin and Rev. John West mainly regarding personation prosecution by Daniel Dalgleish and miscellaneous papers concerning Captain Cook's landing place (c.1870-1871). (b) Frederick S. E. Holt, 1886-1899, including letters from W. B. Dalley and Critchett Walker and a draft letter by F. S. E. Holt, 1899, concerning Cook's landing place. (II) Business papers, relating to (a) T. Holt's Pitt Street and Terry Lane's properties and the formation of Martin Place, Sydney, 1862-1892, and (b) various letter books, minutes of Board meetings, legal and financial papers of the Holt-Sutherland Estate Land Company, 1861-1933.

T. Holt, 1811-1888, wool merchant, financier and politician arrived in Sydney, N.S.W., 16 Nov. 1842. In August 1861 he bought an estate, the Holt Sutherland Estate, extending from Botany Bay to Port Hacking. The Holt-Sutherland Estate Land Co. Ltd., was formed in 1881 with a 56 year lease of the property. His son, Frederick Samuel Ellis Holt was managing trustee of his estate. From the description of Papers [manuscript].
